Health Requirements Governing the Admission Of Animals
SWINE
All Swine:
All breeding or feeding swine must be accompanied by a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection, showing individual identification; and must originate from a herd or area not under quarantine. Free ranging feral swine prohibited.
Brucellosis:
All breeding swine must prove negative to a brucellosis test conducted within thirty days; or originate from a brucellosis validated herd, date of last test and herd certification number to be indicated on the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection. Breeding swine originating from states classified as validated brucellosis free are exempt from brucellosis test requirements. All captive wild-type (feral) swine must prove negative to a brucellosis test within 30 days.
Pseudorabies:
All breeding swine must be negative to an official pseudorabies test conducted within thirty days; or originate from a qualified pseudorabies negative herd or a qualified negative gene-altered vaccinated herd with date of last test and herd certification number shown on Certificate of Veterinary Inspection; or originate from a class IV or class V state or area with an incidence equal to, or lower than, a class IV or higher state. All captive wild-type (feral) swine must prove negative to an official pseudorabies test within 30 days.
Acceptable identification of breeding swine entering Iowa include:
1. Official premise identification tattoo including state of origin (Ex. IA123)
2. Official ear tags (Ex. 42AAA0000)
3. Ear notches (Registered purebreds only)
Swine for Slaughter - All known pseudorabies non-infected swine moving directly to slaughter or to a fixed concentration point for sale directly to a slaughtering establishment for immediate slaughter may move without restriction.
Slaughter swine from herds under pseudorabies quarantine:
Pseudorabies quarantined swine which move into Iowa for slaughter must: (1) be accompanied by a federal shipping permit Form 1-27 issued by an accredited veterinarian, and (2) must be transported in vehicles which are sealed by an accredited veterinarian. Seals may only be broken at federally licensed slaughtering establishments.
Feeder Swine:
All feeder swine shall have affixed in either ear of each animal an official approved identification bearing a number and the name of the state of origin or a USDA Approved Premise Tattoo.
All feeder swine must originate from a qualified negative (vaccinated or unvaccinated) herd, a monitored herd, a Stage III, IV, or V state or area, an area outside the U.S. with an incidence equal to or lower than Stage III, IV, or V, or be tested negative within 30 days prior to importation.
One of the following statements are required on all Certificates of Veterinary Inspection:
1. "These pigs are from a monitored herd (monitored herd #________) tested within the last 12 months (include date tested).
2. These feeder pigs are quarantined until moved to slaughter unless tested negative within 30 days of importation"; or,
3. "These pigs were born and raised in the state/area of ________________ (include name of low incidence state/area).
