West Nile Virus

Several suspected and confirmed cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) in horses are appearing throughout the state of Iowa. In addition, there have been several inquiries on how to proceed if presented with suspected case of WNV in a horse.

West Nile Virus is a reportable disease and required by Iowa Code of Law to be reported to the State Veterinarian.

If you examine a horse suspected of having West Nile Virus, draw a blood sample(s) and submit to National Veterinary Services Laboratory, 1800 Dayton Rd., Ames, Iowa, 50010. Along with the sample(s), you must include a completed VS Form 10-4 and VS Form 10-4a.

Click on the links below to download the the forms required. Please provide all the information requested on the submission form.  Failure to provide the information may preclude the testing. We need to maintain good epidemiologic surveillance information for this disease.

If you have questions please feel free to contact me at 515-281-5305. We have a thriving horse industry in Iowa, and we need to take every effort to protect it. Thank you for your help in this matter.
